New Mercedes AMG GT Black Series

It’s all getting a bit confusing now. Conflicting messaging stirring the emotions. First, merc says that they’re discontinuing the V8 with C63 desciples up in arms that they’re going to be left with 43 instead of 63 badging and a baptism of lemon juice. Then, in the next breath, they’re launching the most powerful V8 produced to date. It’s like an abusive relationship where the spouse says they’re going to change and ‘‘we need to stay together for the kids’’ and do. Meet the AMG GT Black Series and you’re quickly forgetting the badge dilemma. 

0-100 in 3.2 seconds is hammered through by the 573kW 4-Litre Bi-Turbo V8 that utilises flat crankshaft technology which allows the rev range to hit the 7200 RPM limiter and when cycling through the first few gears should render the objects in your rearview mirror no bigger than mere pixels, rather quickly. The 200km/h mark is achieved in under 9 seconds and the top speed is limited to 325km/h. Torque specs are sitting around 800Nm which should feel like a bunch of angry school kids grimacing and grounding their teeth whilst kicking you in the back, repeatedly. Fuel consumption equates to raging alcoholism status at 12.8l/100km but that’s not why you’re buying this car.  

Spare a thought for all that power being managed by the AMG Speedshift 7 Speed Dual DCT transmission which has been positioned at the rear of the car to aid weight distribution. Carbon fibre driveshafts also reduce power loss while saving weight in the GT at the same time. If you’ve been paying attention to Mercedes’ GT racing program over the past few years then you’ll appreciate the successes achieved and school fees paid which has been implemented into their road-going cars directly from the track. Another example at just how important racing is to road car performance. 

Even though some of the bits and pieces might look like a ‘Midas special’, I’ll assure you that, unlike the noted analogy’s lack of function and tacky looks, in the AMG way of doing things, each and every component serves an important function like a front diffuser that can be lowered at certain speeds giving it a venturi effect, glueing the chassis to the ground with negative air pressure or under car panelling that assists in providing 400kg of downforce (Sounds like a science experiment). Other items include larger air inlets derived directly from the GT3 car and a bunch of tricks that guide airflow to either disperse heat or cool things down separating a ludicrous amount of carbon fibre.

Black series Mercs have always been cookers and I have a gut feeling that this is going to be the ultimate version of the uber slick GT and the type of car that you can pack in more than a t-shirt and spare change of underpants for that weekend getaway. The latter you may need to replace more than once.
