The 5 best 'non-car' movie car scenes
Most car movie moments are about the chase. Perhaps it’s high time we stop and acknowledge some “non-car movie” car moments that have left a lasting impression. Highly likely it had some car-themed sub-text or had something that got you peeing your pants a little from laughing versus any high-speed drama that is usually associated with car scenes ala Ronin and James Bond. Either way, I picked five scenes that have remained on the radar and have been repeated at social gatherings throughout the years. Some are out of period type cult classics that can stay with you from the developing years to adulting. Others are downright rib busting on the humour front. Without further ado, let’s get to it.
5. Pineapple Express – Daewoo Lanos
Pineapple express could be on the top ten of all-time comedic greats with a cast of comedy heavy hitters like Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny Mcbride and Craig Robinson. In this scene comes an unlikely hero, a Daewoo Lanos, a product of the now-defunct motor Company in 2011. If you’ve seen the movie and are a fan of Danny Mcbride’s work then you’ll already know what I’m talking about.
4. Snatch - Tyrone the Getaway Driver
Vince - “He’s done a rally driving course…haven’t ya Tyrone”
Tyrone - “of course I have”
One can see why Madonna fell so hard for Guy Ritchie…the man is a genius and his product is every bit reflective of that. From the cult classic, SNATCH comes one of the greatest car scenes to be produced. (My opinion…I know) Brilliantly laced with characters on every opposite end of the spectrum, this is the scene where they’re getting ready to rob the ‘bookies’. The getaway car of choice, a Rover SD1.
3. The Wolf of Wall Street - THAT Lamborghini Countach scene
We all remember that part where Jordan Belfort navigates home after overindulging in lemon quaaludes, thinking he made it home ok, only for the reality to be far from it. Don’t drink and drive, kids. Luckily for us, the level of ‘cringe worthiness’ felt after seeing that crushed Lambo is suppressed by the fact that that’s not a real car smashed but rather some made up fibreglass movie prop. (We hope).
2. True Romance - Elliot gets pulled over by the cops
In typical Quentin Tarantino mayhem, Elliot Blitzer gets pulled over by the cops for speeding. What follows is a dilemma around what to do with a kilogram of tradable party powder. I mean who doesn’t appreciate the ‘go-to’ choice for playboys in the 80s, being a Flachbau Porka?!
“You’re so cool!”
1. Pulp Fiction - “I shot Marvin in the face”
In a scene stemming from, arguably one of the greatest cult films of all time, Pulp Fiction, Vincent and Jules discuss retirement. Funny. That is where things go VERY wrong.
”aaaawww man, I shot Marvin in the face” - could be one of the best delivered lines in film history.
