Ford got it right with the naming convention. Bronco means “wild or an untamed horse” and finding a cooler name for an off-roading vehicle will be hard to find. Tough and ready, it is with the right aesthetics to boot.

Those of you long-standing petrol junkies will know that the name “Bronco” isn’t any stranger to the off-roading community. Its history, tracing way back to 1951 shortly after the end of the Second World War, being produced until 1996, returns from its hiatus.

Ford messaging is heavily centred around the idea that this will turn your every-day commuter into an off-roading cowboy boasting a plethora of gadgetry.

Engine options available are the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine offering 230kW and 540Nm and 2.3 EcoBoost offering 200kW and 418Nm of torque. There are seven selectable drive modes, Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Sand, with Baja, Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl for off-road driving.

There are two 4x4 systems offered which include a base setup and advanced 4x4, the latter uses a two-speed electromechanical transfer case but for the less enthusiastic, the base model will do, using a two-speed electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case. There’s trail control (cruise control for the dirt) and transmission options include 10-Speed automatic as well as a 6-Speed manual.

But…sigh, the South African market will not be getting this anytime soon.
