Toyota GR Corolla Pricing Revealed

We bring you official word from the mothership in the form of pricing of the much anticipated GR Corolla. Drumroll, please.

First, let's paint the picture. Two models are on offer: the 1.6T Core and the 1.6T Circuit starting at R816 500 and R876 100, respectively. If you want a little hint as to how competitive that price is, note that the GR Yaris comes in at R791,000. Do we have your attention? Good.

The engine is based on the GR Yaris, and it shares everything with the pint-size pocket rocket, but with the twist, that power is increased to 221kW (12% over the GR Yaris) from the 1.6-litre Turbocharged 3-cylinder Engine. This is a trade-off against the extra weight, around 200kg heavier. Torque figures are 370Nm, and with this, you'll get a 6-speed manual transmission with power delivered to all four wheels using the GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, fresh from the blueprints of the World Rally Championship Toyota Gazoo Rally Racing Team. There isn't an automatic version, so you'll have to go vintage on those shifts.

No performance figures have been released yet, but judging by the data so far, it is likely looking to be as quick as the GR Yaris, and from what else we've noticed, Toyota has been known to underplay the actual performance numbers. Hopefully, we'll get one and deliver the real-life data to verify that. Fingers crossed.

How does it compare against the competition…price-wise?

It's sure to be a hit for cost-conscious performance hatch shoppers, and I know there are a few of you left out there (Shine a light for proof of life, please). Coming in at just short of R102 900 when compared to the new Honda Civic Type R, which starts at R979 000 and almost R36 000 cheaper than the Golf 8 R, which starts at R912 500 (Both comparisons involved the Circuit version of the GR Corolla for fairness sake), it's sure to have ruffled a few feathers in the pricing war. Albeit any of these cars are not pushing big volumes, it's welcoming to the performance enthusiast out there that you can get something as potentially potent as a GR Corolla. And best you act quickly as Toyota is bringing limited numbers down.

What are the differences between the Core and Circuit version?

The Circuit version gets the limited-slip differential on each axle, and the carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof. Both versions, however, come with a manual hand brake, so you can induce some sideways action and bust out hand brake turns in the parking lot if you'd like to conjure up those memories of growing up…or maybe not growing up.

Regarding styling, we love the touring car inspired flared arches and air ducts all around. My only concern is that we don't get a sedan version of it as Hyundai did with the Elantra N….but hey, we can't have everything… can we, Toyota? Cough

Let me know what you think of the pricing in the comments.
